In the aerobic mitochondrial pathway, oxygen is used as the final electron acceptor. The electrons circulate as an electric current until the end of their journey where they join two by two, to the hydrogen that we breathe, to form water. This is the mechanics of mitochondrial respiration, some leave and others arrive so that the flow of electrons does not stop and energy production is maintained. In the end, ATP, CO2, CYANIDE and H2O are produced.
The final electrons must leave the cell without damaging it (that is, without touching anything). But it's not always like this. Some electrons do not reach the end directly by following the natural current but accidentally leave it before reaching oxygen. They also end up bonded to oxygen which, as it only accepts them one by one, and therefore does not form water, they end up in the form of 2 chemically bonded oxygen atoms, very toxic to the cell, the fearsome superoxide (O2-). The superoxide must be removed as soon as possible. The enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) captures superoxide and releases oxygen that binds to hydrogen to form hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Hydrogen peroxide is still very toxic to the cell (very oxidizing). But 2 more enzymes (glutathione and catalase) that work coupled with super oxide dismutase convert hydrogen peroxide into harmless water (H2O).
In the aerobic pathway, mitochondrial respiration is supervised by specific antioxidant enzymes. If any electron escapes from the electrical path, they capture it and turn it into hydrogen peroxide and then into harmless water. In the anaerobic pathway, oxygen is not the final electron acceptor. The anaerobic cell does not have the intracellular antioxidant enzymes typical of mitochondrial respiration because it does not need them. And it is not prepared to neutralize oxygen.
